Bushranger 71

The Russians have produced a range of very capable corvette class vessels below 1,000 tonnes displacement. See this link: http://sputniknews.com/militar.... I saw 2 of them in Sevastopol recently.
Australia needs a navy structured primarily for archipelago operations and AWD, LPDs and even submarines are arguably unnecessary and unaffordable. Appropriately armed corvette class vessels would be adequate for regional operations.
The existing patrol boat fleet is next to useless regarding military capability and would be better replaced by the very versatile JHSV-1 developed by Austal - see:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
The small shipbuilders in Australia were quite capable of building corvette class and landing craft, yet this segment of national industry has effectively been torpedoed by absurdly ambitious projects for larger naval platforms involving the bigger arms manufacturers.
