Kym Bergmann has done some outstanding Defence reporting and we should be thankful for it as things like this appear so few and far between down this way.
Historically I haven't agreed with everything he has written in the past. For example: the F-35.
This recent article (Kym Bergmann, 'Battlefield Airlifter Headaches?', Asia Pacific Defence Reporter : APDR 06 2014 Pg 50) shows a variety of problems of how Defence decided on the C-27J acquisition and the remaining trouble.
It points out that the effort is overly expensive, the requirement flawed, and getting it into service has the kind of bumps that could have been avoided.
Some of us that observed this thing for the past few years knew it was a bad idea.
There was no competition. Spendthrift, that is Defence.
Kym points out that U.S. FMS is expensive. Yes, when there is no bargaining; no competition and the customer is an easy mark for the sales force.
In the end, there was no need to "replace" the Caribou. Refurbished with turbo-props, it would have done a lot and, would be "good enough" for years in our regional area of interest.
If Kym were to continue this pattern of reporting, the house of cards that is the entrenched Defence bureaucracy and their dishonest talking points could be shown for what they are. Like cockroaches running when illuminated.
Australia could benefit from this. It would in-fact, help improve the nation's defence posture.
With one...good...journalist.
