There are reports that one option to replace Australia's troubled Collins-class submarines would be the Japanese Soryu-class.
Off-the-shelf.
It could make some sense. Although I doubt it is for the $600M reported by the news.
Reason? Once the insurgent, self-serving DMO get their greasy meat-hooks into the project the price will climb.
And for 6 boats instead of the 12 (which was an unworkable fantasy number) it may just work.
The Japanese may be able to help out with Collins sustainment reports the same news source, although I doubt that given that all the players and solutions are pretty much lined up.
Also of interest:
Senator Johnston will also urge Defence to get moving quickly so a decision can be taken by March 2015.
He will point out that it took Singapore just 10 months to move from concept to decision for its new submarine.
The rent-seekers at home should not worry. There is plenty of work for them to do building patrol boats and frigates.
In other news, the Chinese communists are all unhappy about Australian friendship with Japan.
My thoughts? Trade with China, but tell communists to go take a flying leap if they don't like our diplomatic relations.
Communists are bullies. Treat them as such. They will still trade.
