Engagement with Indonesia needs logic. But what kind?

This is an interesting article about Australian engagement with Indonesia but I lost it toward the end:

To that end Abbott should put the offer of much deeper defence engagement on the table. He should discuss with Yudhoyono options to help equip the Indonesian navy with patrol vessels.

Probably not.

Buying military and police hardware are not Indonesia's weak points:

Consider this summary provided by a friend:

Under Labor, Australian Aid to Indonesia in 2013-14 was to be increased by $105 million to $646 million, for school and health programs. In June-July Indonesia bought 3 new British built Ragam Class navy corvettes for $190 million - and a prestigious Spanish built 110 metre long three masted tall ship, for training naval cadets, for $70 million.

8 AH 64D Apache battlefield assault helicopters for $1.4 billion.
42 batteries of a Brazilian made artillery rocket system for $402 million.
36 batteries of French made 155 millimetre self-propelled artillery for $170 million.

I would also say this: if communication between Australia and Indonesia is so important, why is Bahasa Indonesia, the official language of Indonesia, not widely taught here?

Damned if I can find it taugh anywhere in Australian secondary schools. Worse? Teachings of Pacific geography and history are also weak in the Australian school system. How the hell do we understand our nearest neighbor if we raise a nation of idiots?
