Tank factory closing?

The U.S. M-1 tank plant could close. The Army and Congress have different thoughts on that: elections, votes and graft. Rarely is the conversation brought up to use all this industry talent to make good (or good enough), useful, affordable and sustainable tanks...that don't weigh so much.

How many M-1 tanks does the U.S. have in service? Hard to say when you count up the hard cases that just never stay repaired.

And then there are the hundreds in storage at Anniston Army Depot, Alabama. Some look like tanks. Some are in pieces. If you have Google Earth, it is a good time-waster.

There are a lot more parked North of Reno, Nevada...

With more funding crunches in the future, it looks like there is still some extra parking space to be used. And unless there are any new, practical ideas for tank requirements, the factory needs to close.
