Rather than re-wing/re-centre wing box the airframes, update to a glass cockpit and any other mods that would see the type work in a useful and relevant way for at least another 20 years, our DoD claim they are effectively Time-Ex, obsolete and surplus to requirements. And then of course immediately offer them free to Indonesia to upgrade, who (apparently) miraculously exist in a parallel reality where upgraded C-130H's DO work well.
For the price of the C-27 charade we could have upgraded and re-life'd the H model airframes, AND bought a number of additional Chinooks, C-295's or even just Dash-8's. After all, all the ADF does these days is act as a taxpayer subsidised freight operator in third world countries, rather than actually think smart about fighting in real wars.
I have also heard that the special forces rather prefer the earlier models of C-130 because there are more people on the flight deck to coordinate drops in difficult locations.
So it begs the question, what are these idiots doing donating 4 C-130H to a neighbour that already has 28 Hercules in service but cant be bothered to spend the money keeping all of those in flightworthy condition?
Look at what the New Zealanders have done with theirs, and they have many more hours flown. They know how to get value out of dollar. And we spend $1.7 billion on the C27.Have still to find out how we got to that figure.Still the DMO never makes a mistake.
And I love the story from Smith and Gillard that they will be used to patrol the seas spotting Illegal/Economic Refugees on their way to Australia. Pretty expensive way to undertake a patrol.

Err your link makes no reference to SK C-139 upgrades.
This is the usual ADF/ Govt idiocy at work.

An. It works for me.
Harping I know; but similar story for Iroquois, Caribou and probably Blackhawk and Seahawk.

On another note, the Canadians got over 40,000 hours out of their retiring C130's .
