The battlefield logistics problem has caused the USAF to ask for an additonal $369M for increased airlift ops to help fill the gap. This includes $137M to pay for repair of C-17 engines, "due to increased wear and accelerated parts damage," as reported by Defense News.
USAF war requirements seem a lot more realistic these days. A few years ago USAF tried to pull a fast one by tacking on an additional faulty, under-developed and overly expensive F-35 as a replacement for an F-16 lost in the war.
On that note, in order to make ends meet, USAF has also requested the removal of 109.7M from the F-35 program due to a previous DOD restructure.
I still believe that the coming minor DOD budget triming over 10 years that some are crying about is more of an opportunity to improve things.
For instance, this comment from the Defense News pieces says it all when describing the waste involved in a dud weapons system:
An additional $90.6 million for the DDG 1000 destroyer program due to increased labor and overhead costs on contracts from 2007 and ’08.
If anyone cares, that was several budgets ago.
