Italy reduces F-35 order by 40

Italy has reduced their order of F-35s by 40.

Cost is the main reason cited however why did that cost go up?

It went up because of significant incompetence in the area of F-35 program leadership and management which has produced a raft of defects yet to be fixed.

I like the 10,000 potential jobs. Seems to be standard LM press fud for the journos. I mean, who cares if the plane actually works when you can potentially employ 10,000 people.

Let's see, 131 - 40 = 91 planes ordered by 2018. I'll bet that number dwindles every fiscal year, until there is nothing left to order. The Italian national debt will be a huge issue for years to come.

Yip, ZERO will be the number. There is no way an EU deficit country will do a major non-EU-sourced defence programme (local assembly or not).

A cut of 40 is also based on the assumption that they will end up being an $80m jet.

Once the plan cannot be held in the bag any longer however and the hard truth is finally realized that these puppies in final refurbished and mature design configuration are going to be the price of a manned Mars mission -- no matter how many zillions are bought -- the logic will probably be something like... well, we still need this jet as our dominance platform for the next 50 years, even if we can only afford 15 of them.
