It can always be worse...

As bad as Australia's submarine program is, Canada shows us it could always be worse.

There are just too many examples of gross stupidity so take the time and read the full story.

From a similar story in the Globe and Mail:

“Military experts don’t dispute the value of submarines to a nation such as Canada, with its vast coastline. The stealthy diesel-electric subs can covertly combat smuggling, illegal fishing, terrorism and polluters.”

Those are all law enforcement/Coast Guard roles; any “military expert” who thinks very expensive subs are important for those missions should have his head examined. No other navy cites such missions as justifications for their boats.

But the Royal Canadian Navy in fact itself does tout those roles too.

So in a fleet of 4, 1 was damaged by fire(operating mistake which allowed water to short out electrics), 1 by collision(operation error), and the other two in planned refit work till 2012 which is quite a normal.

In regard to not being able to fire Canadian torps, I'm sure the UK could provide a half a dozen to Canada in time for any possible conflict.

The number of torps that have been fired in anger in the past 40 years is minuscule.

Why not look at the Indian and Chinese efforts, far worse.
