I seriously feel sorry for this person's lack of ability to perform any kind of military reporting. Not much of what is stated here is true.
Compare what was reported, to the opposite from this subject matter expert.
Copy-pasting industry and government propaganda is not reporting.

Sheridan was probably speaking to some "experts" from DMO?
Experts are allowed to speak to no-one, don't you know.
Only senior management types and, of course, the PR spin doctors can speak for the DMO.
Ah, now I understand.
Unfortunately the same ones giving advice to Smith.
Non engineers?
Those whose expertise lies elsewhere than in Engineering, Physics and the other Sciences tend to view the world in terms of "who is right" (and, therefore, "who is wrong) rather than what is right and what is best.
This comes from such things as "on the one hand you have this, yet, on the other hand you have that, so the answer lies somewhere in the middle".
In humanities based matters, this is not unreasonable since these mostly follow a Gaussian distribution - and can be represented by the good old Bell Curve or Normal Distribution.
In Engineering and Technical Science based matters this is not the case and falling into the trap of such "normalisation of deviance", otherwise known as the "bias of normalcy" generally ends in failed designs and catastrophes.
By design, Engineers must look at the full envelope in which their designs must exist and operate, including those parts of the envelope 3 sigma and more beyond the norm.
Not to do so is foolish as well as professionally negligent.
Guys, remember that this is about a US Navy capability, not an Australian one. At this point I'm unaware that OZ has any plan to "invest"in any of these hulks, therefore DMO is not involved.
Ah, but you miss the point. The Jounalist, no doubt got his information from someone in the DMO. Only the DMO could have provided such crap information.
I like to damn the incompetence and spin of DMO as much as the next guy, but they aren't the ones to blame here. This is a shoddy repost of a Sunday Times (UK) story, under Sheridan's byline. That's not original aussie crap reporting, it's second hand brit crap reporting.
