Things are getting interesting, if either the German or French win it could lead to a Collins replacement a lot quicker than 2030.
The reason is simply. The Japanese proposal would have been effectively 2 stage, complete their own design of an evolved Soryu, then produce an Australianised version. To a large degree this would had to have been step 1 step 2 with limited overlap, hence 2030. Both Germany and France can go to an Australianised design from their existing bases.
I does however create a problem. On the announced timings the plan seemed to be start the frigate construction in Adelaide in 2020 get it underway and the first ship in the water and the program settled, to allow a start on submarine construction around 2025 with the idea of getting a boat in the water in the late 2020,s and into service by 2030. Both the French and Germans will want to get on as quickly as possible both to get the money and to keep their designs plans from getting stale.
It kind of beggars belief that Adelaide could handle 2 project of the size of the Frigates and Submarines in virtual parallel when they couldn't handle he AWD, so something will have to give. If the 2 projects pull too close together and they are both make work for Adelaide our politicians may be about to create another taxpayer funded mess.
