According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the average daily cost of operations against the so-called Islamic State is about $11 million. $6.2 billion has been allocated to fight the terrorist group in total, including $5.4 billion in fiscal year 2015, according to research conducted by the National Priorities Project. Even though the conflict in Afghanistan is winding down, over $35 billion was still allocated for it in fiscal year 2015, along with $30 billion for a Pentagon “slush fund” not directly related to conflict but used to evade legislated budget caps.
Since 2001, a grand total of just under $715 billion has been allocated to the war in Afghanistan while Iraq has cost the U.S. $1.64 trillion. The figures included here are based on funding for the Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) account and include both military and non-military OCO spending, such as reconstruction and funds for the Department of State.
