No surprise that the roadmap for the ADF is being done all wrong.
The very first goal of defence is to protect its citizens.
Let us consider the threats.
Using the Paris attack and the Sydney cafe attack last year as an example.
You may and the Bali attack to that for some further historical reference.
With a small military, we can only do so much.
Today, former prime minister Abbott suggested we send more of our valued SAS to the Middle East. We do not need to send more of them, or, any of them.
Sending the SAS as well as other parts of our military off to the Middle East and southwest Asia is a mistake. Our military is small. Our military has limited resources. Our military only has enough capacity to be subject matter experts and maintain readiness in our region.
When we take our limited forces away and send them on the other side of the plant our regional and home security is diminished.
If a Paris-like event (or worse) happens here at home, we will need everybody wearing a uniform to pitch in with their talents. And even then we may not have enough uniforms, from the pointy end of the spear to logistics and back office.
A royal commission investigating a future, mass-casualty event here at home that reports too much of our military resources were on the other side of the world when their manpower could have saved hundreds of lives is a distinct possibility.
Those in Canberra ignore this at our peril.
