The idea from the circles of the Australian Entrenched Defence Bureaucracy that Australia is capable of maintaining regional air superiority doesn't have anything to back it up.
"Maintaining regional air superiority" is the often mentioned goal in Defence White Papers and other military strategic statements that come out of Canberra circles. It is also the justification to purchase tens of billions for an aircraft system that will get shot down if it ever sees combat.
While we will briefly look at technology, the main limiting factor in all this is leadership.
Platitude and rent-seeking will not provide the proper deterrence for any future aggressor.
The current path of Defence only invites weakness. Spending tens of billions of dollars by itself, does not equal a strong national Defence.
We do not have regional air superiority or other kinds of strategic deterrent when what we have and want Defence wants for the future won't be competitive.
Indonesia is working on having integrated air defences that can, as a deterrent, make it clear that if you don't have the muscle, you can't challenge them with diplomacy.
Working on getting especially dangerous surface-to-air missiles along with especially dangerous fighter aircraft enhances Indonesian diplomacy.

Our government officials have been warned, for years.
