Senate References Committee Report on the future of Australia’s naval shipbuilding industry long-term planning

The last part of the Senate’s inquiry into the future sustainability of Australia's strategically vital naval shipbuilding industry was released. This part focused on the a continuous national shipbuilding strategy. This is what our campaign has been calling for all along - it's a positive step to providing Government with the evidence they need to implement a strategy to save Australia’s shipbuilding industry, and invest into the sector, our economy and our national security. Read more.

Tony Abbott commits to 'continuous build' of new surface naval ships

For the first time since we launched our campaign, a senior government representative – the Prime Minister for that matter – made an official announcement towards a continuous building plan for the shipbuilding industry. The announcement only included surface ships, not submarines. The Australian Made Defence campaign acknowledges this is a positive step, but more needs to be done to confront the Valley of Death in the sector. Read more.

Shipbuilding industry on the brink

Up to 1100 jobs at the Williamstown BAE Systems shipyard are left on the brink following an announcement the company would not tender for the $600 million construction of 21 new Pacific patrol boats because the contract would not be awarded until 2017. This sparked calls by to bring the contract forward, along with strategies to address the Valley of Death. Read more.
