With the launch of the first Air Warfare Destroyer this weekend, the RAN will be facing some interesting capability decsions.
While the ship itself may be faulty and mostly obsolete to the threat, it could offer a "capability" that is also a capability wish-list for the Collins submarine replacement.
That is the Tomahawk cruise missile.
The Air Warfare Destroyer will be able to eventually hit fixed land targets, up to 1600km (1000 miles) away.
You can look at a map of Australia's regional area to have a better understanding.
It is understood that the RAN wants the Tomahawk capability in the Collins submarine replacement.
Some could argue that this feature could be bargained away, to keep the cost and complexity of the Collins submarine replacement under control.
