Up to 1500 public servants in the Defence Department will face the sack under a long-awaited review into the nation's Defence establishment, with the axe to begin falling within months.
Where to start with all this? As, there is a lot of ground to cover.
I am curious how a study (force review and white paper expected soon) would justify increasing the number of uniforms when we are not using current manpower slots effectively today?
We have several chunks of manpower tied up in weapon systems that provide no combat effectiveness.
That would be the M-1 tank, the Tigre and MRH-90 helicopter for a start.
Then there is the festering sore of 170-plus flag ranks. That is a lot of star-perks we pay for.
So, increase the manpower slots but don't get rid of make-work programs. A poor plan.
Defence civilians do need to be cut. But the same measure applies as with the uniforms. Like the star-ranks, there are too many senior service executives. For everyone else in this bucket, when you get rid of the weapon systems I stated above, you get rid of the cubicle-bunnies and other associated civilian support.
I am worried about having enough engineers on hand that can think.
We will need them if this nation puts its weight behind a Collins submarine replacement program.
A tough fight with so many problems in the system of systems.
