Lessons learned from Wedgetail could help Collins sub replacement

The RAAF E-7 Wedgetail project has a lot of history in it that could very well help a future Collins submarine replacement program.

This L-band array on a 737 was inspired by Australia.

At the time Australia didn't want to pay for other AWACs solutions that didn't offer anything new and were expensive.

The program ran into several issues that make for good learning today.

At the beginning of the project, several hundred items that were identified as risks were simply ignored.

Later those items no longer became risks but real show-stoppers. That is want happens when you ignore identified risks.

Today few know what 10 percent of lost goals in the capability ( a 90 percent fix was considered the solution) are missing.

Another thing than came out of this was a big software lab run mostly by Australian skilling.

Finally, Boeing in turn, was able to take an Australian requirement and add it to their portfolio for other countries to consider buying.

Australia has an ample amount of program management screw ups as a history.

One would hope there is so much tribal knowledge in that regard to make the Collins submarine replacement program, just a bit easier.
