The Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) has announced that the KC-30A Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft has been removed from the Projects of Concern list, following acceptance of the boom capability.
AIR 5402 had been managed as a Project of Concern since February 2010 due to delays in delivery attributed to Airbus Defence and Space, Defence stated.
Full story at ADBR.
On the class curve it is one of the more useful aircraft in Defence. Long range (non-stop trips from Australia to Alaska or Australia to Texas) have been done.
The top floor is not cargo pallet rated (unfortunately) but it can carry some cargo below. It is big and lack of parking space up North has caused a few issues.
Currently Australia is booked for 5. One may become a VIP aircraft. Defence would like to get a couple more.
If it isn't roll-on / roll-off cargo, this aircraft is more economical to move troops log distances to logistics hubs in the Middle East.
