Reader comments - Australian ship-building

The Australian Government is finally getting organised http://www.defense-aerospace.c.... (MORE ON THIS ABOVE -- ELP)

On your questions, Australia is never going to match production costs in China or Korea but so what. Australia has spent more in imports than it has earned just about every year since the economy swallowed the free? trade line in the early 1980's. The Australian economy is largely based on t he big 4 Australian banks ability to borrow money to finance property speculation. The party has to end at some point and when that happens it will become painfully evident just how much industry Australia has lost. Hanging on to heavy metal fabrication and project management is a good hedge for the skilled jobs it provides and the management skills it generates. Every time the Australian economy puts on a spurt the first thing that arises are chronic skill shortages in just about every blue collar and production management field.

On workload, the RAN has 11 surface combatants, 2 survey ships 4 inshore survey vessels, 13 (now) patrol boats, 6 submarines, 3 landing ships and `2 tankers. Customs has 2 ocean going patrol ships and 9 patrol vessels. The Antarctic division has a ice strengthened supply ship That is enough to sustain 2 yards chasing either prime or subcontract roles in a half way efficient manner if Australian politicians started planning and stopped screwing around. The problem is largely Australian politicians. Cheap is only cheap if you can afford it.
