Via Blacktail in another post in regard to B-52 upgrades...

Blacktail

As it happens, the USAF initiated a program in the mid-1970s to re-engine the B-52 fleet, but Rockwell --- who was trying to sell the B-1A Excalibur at the time --- quickly put an end to that.
The B-1 Lobby put in a few calls to a few USAF higher-ups, and soon after Boeing received a phone call stating. According to The Wild Blue Yonder, a book about the conception, development, and procurement of the B-1 (buy that book!), a USAF official told Boeing, "You have a lot of projects with the Air Force. Stop pushing that B-52 proposal. We need a new bomber".
Boeing then dutifully terminated the B-52 re-engine project... along with it's proposed 747 cruise missile carrier.
