Subs...yes subs.... again

It appears that some of the readership on this blog have a better appreciation of the Japanese sub issues than some of the cheerleaders in government.

Well, I guess, no surprise there.

I am curious how a Japanese sub will be considered "off-the-shelf" if there are so many different things that have to be done to it so as to meet a "requirement". That didn't work out so well with the Air Warfare Destroyer program.

I would op more for: "anything is possible if you are willing to lower your expectations."

Just a simple paper "study" shows that a true "off-the-shelf" sub design that is small and can do some mission-sets in our Northern waters could put $27B on the table for home industry over 30 years.

That isn't terrible. It is reasonable.

Acquire 12, simple, low-crew, not-do-every-exotic-mission-set subs for about $900M each.

Basic acquisition: $10.8B

About $1B per year for sustainment.

$30B sustainment over 30 years.

By the time you involve the defective DMO into the picture and other idiots you are going to loose some of that money to the trash bin.

$27B is what I think could be offered to industry. For 30 years. Your results may vary.

That is for a weapon system that will actually work. That is much more money for industry than any other weapon system thus far. Many of those: defective.
