Navy ships plan a threat to jobs

ONE of Australia’s three naval shipyards, Forgacs in Newcastle, could collapse with the loss of 780 jobs if the government goes ahead with confidential advice to strip the yard of naval work as part of the rescue plan for the $8.5 billion Air Warfare Destroyer project.

The proposal would see extra construction work for the three AWDs reallocated from Forgacs to Adelaide and Melbourne to improve the efficiency of the defence project, which is running at least two years late and more than $300 million over budget.

Stewart is still under the illusion that the AWD project is $300 over budget.

It is not.

Under this possible reshuffle:

The AWDs would still be constructed in Adelaide, with the current AWD workforce there likely to be re-employed under BAE. But BAE’s control over the project would also allow the British shipbuilder to redirect some AWD work to its Williamstown shipyard, to help keep the 1000 jobs that will be lost next year if the yard does not receive more work.

We spend $29B per year for Defence.

For little return on investment.

A taxpayer funded, self-licking ice-cream cone, jobs program.
