Rent-seeking conference

The Australian Financial Review, print edition, had a few pages of soft-ball promoting of Defence and rent-seekers efforts yesterday.

A sample of some of the adverts? One shows the often used image of the camo-faced guy in the business suit. It claims that there is $180B of Defence business out there for the next 10 years in reference to a big rent-seeking conference coming up in July. The graphic in the top center of the advert is the Defence Material Organisation (DMO). Which means since they have their grimy hands on it, you are going to see billions misspent. As per standard operating procedure for the DMO. More efficient to have a burn pit and toss the money in their directly (takes less manpower).

The other interesting part of that? Those businesses not in the Soviet-industry-method club like ASC do not trust the DMO. For good reason.

Another advert claims South Australia is the Defence State. The main graphic? ADF M-1 tanks.

Win.

Until Australia wakes up and decides that they are not getting much of a return on investment for the billions of their money spent, this kind of legal money laundering and theft-by-trick-or-device, will continue.

Of that $180B over 10 years? I see a better effort in $100B of that over 10 years being spent to pay off the federal debt.

That is demonstrated value. And, Defence is one of the worst, most ineffective ways, to create jobs.
