In today's The Australian, 'Defence Blunder Sends Wrong Signal' a Victoria rent-seeker Mr. Danby wants Defence Minister Johnston gone for his comments on the ANZUS Treaty.
Mr. Johnston stated an opinion which could be considered different than that of the PM on this topic in regard to how Australia and U.S. should respond to conflicts. That is, does ANZUS mean an automatic follow if one of the nations is attacked? Johnston wasn't so sure.
Johnston isn't very bright on Defence topics. Any (foreign) defense industry press release is all the "analysis" he needs on a weapon system, where the answer is usually "ye$".
What gets him in trouble with the rent-seeker mentioned above is not the ANZUS comment but that Johnston had the idea to state that certain kinds of ship-building might not happen at home. That home industry has to show value for the money spent by the taxpayer.
Both do not have a handle on the concept that it is the dysfunctional Defence Material Organisation (DMO), along with deskilled decisions by the entrenched defence bureaucracy that contributes to the long and established trend of Defence procurement and sustainment stuff-ups.
Once that is fixed, THEN one may look at the work-force. And, project management 101 states that you only start projects that you can finish with the existing skills and other resources.
So, while Defence Minister Johnston is ignorant on Defence issues (just like the last several empty suits that have sat in that chair), the issue of his ANZUS comment is not what really upsets the rent-seekers.
What has them upset is that ANYONE dare suggest that the tax payers money doesn't always have to be handed over to Tony Soprano and known associates.
