Interference
A few thoughts on the bad idea of interfering in Russia's back yard.
In looking at the fighter deployments by NATO to the East of Europe I would think that most of those bases would not last more than 30 minutes. Maybe a bit more for Romania.
And what would happen if Russia was to strike these bases? Many in the American public would be howling at DC that this is not in their interests.
That and the aircraft sent are not competitive. For example; CF-18s, and other 20-30 year old aircraft. Russia's military is in no way perfect either. But they have a much shorter support setup for combined arms.
I would suggest that this is not the location to fight the battle over shaping Russia's geo-political goals.
Backing off at this point--if one plays the long game--is not a bad idea.
Sun Tzu would not approve of the current U.S. decisions. And, in order to employ deterrence, you have have a sound foundation to put it on.
The U.S. has a deskilled military and political leadership.
Not the horse to bet on.
More on the current orbat and operational setup? Looking at the various bad decisions of Lee at The Battle of Gettysburg etc. etc. ... I don't have confidence in the U.S. and NATO. NATO could barely put together the forces...to take on...Libya.
Certainly the U.S. Civil War was a long time ago.
So was Desert Storm 1991.
What do I suggest? If Biden, Obama, Kerry and McCain want the U.S. to do something in an area not in our interest, maybe the four of them should grab a pack and a rifle and go.
Leave the rest of us out of it.
