Spend-thrift Defence unable to manage need for simple patrol boats

Same kind of stuff-up, different day.

The number one threat to Australia at this time are illegal boat people. This by the way is not asylum-seeking.

It is colonization.

The RAN and other federal agencies have done an outstanding job stopping the boats.

However, while senior leadership was off procuring multi-billion dollar ships we do not need such as the Canberra-class amphibs and Hobart-class destroyers, we do not have enough properly working patrol boats to face the threat.

OPERATION Sovereign Borders has been dealt a blow, with about half of the navy’s patrol boat fleet suddenly confined to port after the discovery of major structural cracks that make them unseaworthy in rough seas.

The dramatic setback means that navy is able to provide only about half of the mandated number of its Armidale-class patrol boats to the military-run OSB as it seeks to intercept and turn back asylum-seeker boats.

Authorities are racing against time to conduct emergency repairs on the fleet, fearing the end of the monsoon season over the next month may increase the number of asylum-seekers attempting to make the passage to Australia, as has been the case in recent years.

Giving away patrol boats does not help either.
