New Australian helicopter for Navy could suffer from premature corrosion
The Australian Defence Material Organisation (DMO) project known as Project 9000, mulit-role helicopter, MRH-90, may have excessive corrosion problems during normal use in a naval environment.
The RAN requires the MRH-90 to replace their Sea King helicopters.
Last year, the Royal Netherlands Air Force deployed one of its NH Industries NH-90s for the first time aboard a navy vessel. Inspections conducted on the airframe after the mission concluded that the amount of wear and tear and corrosion to the helicopter was much higher than anticipated, reports Flight Global. This problem showed up on other Dutch NH-90's.
The Dutch have determined that design and manufacturing issues along with incomplete maintenance instructions are part of the cause.
The Australian DMO project is over-cost, years-late and is on the DMO Project of Concern list.
2012-2013 ADF cost per flying hour for this helicopter is $31,790.
