Defence contribution toward reducing federal budget expense

In 7 weeks, the Abbott government will be delivering their first federal budget.

The fed is hundreds of billions in debt and unless something realistic is done, it will get worse.

Maybe for 10 years or more.

The fed has to make drastic cuts. This may be difficult in the entitlement society that is Australia.

There is still a lot of waste in Defence. I am going to suggest a proposal that could reduce annual defence spending by $8-$10B.

Since 2000, there has been no credible Defence White Paper. There has been little evidence in having a long range strategy other than problems can be solved by purchase of gold-plated, foreign weapons systems; and foreign logistics support.

Many ADF communities provide no real national Defence value. With that, here we go:

1. Disband the M-1 tank community.
2. Disband the NRH-90 helicopter project.
3. Disband the Tiger helicopter project.
4. Disband the F-35 program.
5. Stop procurement of the P-8A.
6. Stop procurement of the Triton UAV.
7. Park 2 of the C-17s.
8. Park 1 A330 tanker.
9. Park 1 Squadron of Classic F-18s.
10. Disband the Collins Submarine fleet.
11. Stop work on the Air Warfare Destroyer project.
12. Stop work on the LHD Canberra-class ships.
13. Retire 70 percent of the flag ranks.
14. Reduce civilian manning as needed.


This isn't everything but it is a start. Taxpayer investment in Defence is not the top way to create jobs. With that, there are several things the fed can do to improve that issue, but it is outside the topic of this discussion.

It isn't pretty.

Also not pretty is what the previous government did to help destroy this nation's fiscal health.
