Serious risks in terms of project delays and operating cost, as well as concerns over operational capability in comparison with emerging adversary fifth generation and ‘four+’ generation combat aircraft aside, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter currently seems to be ‘the only game in town’ in terms of future RAAF options.
Not an accurate statement.
And as for the USAF. One can break down their needs into:
-Home air defense
-Expeditionary warfare:
---Anti-access air domination
---Interdiction (A Tomahawk or JAASM is a one-time-use UCAV).
---CAS (sometimes "fire-support" which is precision artillery that doesn't collect flight-pay).
---Permissive air missions (so far the only kind (low-cost) UAVs can perform without serious risk).
So, not a one-size-fits-all.
So what can the RAAF do? Start over with a blank sheet of paper for AIR-6000. And since the generous Australian taxpayer has handed over money for 2 F-35 mistake-jets which are officially in production, the F-35 meets all the requirements for the DMO Project of Concern List.
