Sub sea stories--some not true

Lots of muddle but no real answers.

Mr Gould said there was work Australia could do on the Collins to ensure it wasn’t outmatched in the region if its life were extended. But he declined to say what that work was.

I would settle for reliability. Training boats if no other mission.

Reporters (actually people that submit Defence-friendly stories in return for "exclusive" access) miss this lie:

Rear Admiral Moffitt said the capability of European submarines that could be bought "off the shelf"' fell far short of what the Collins was now capable of.

Not true. Off-the-self subs would.......

...work and be affordable.

Odd that the SEA 1000 requirement boondoggle for $36B-plus in new subs can only be performed by a U.S.-made Virginia-class nuke attack sub.

Then you have the silliness from the tax-payer funded guessing crowd; good work if you can get it.

The Lowy paper warns that if defence funding remained below 2 per cent of economic activity (GDP), significant cuts would need to be made.

GDP means nothing if the management is incompetent. Defence is around 6-7 percent of the Federal budget. This is the only metric that is real. Defence gets what they get after the entitlement-society has had its' fief.

In any event, the ADF could be fearfully combat-effective on that percentage of the fed budget.

If only we can break the entrenched defence bureaucracy.
