USMC General misleads public, doesn't mention waste

-13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), 2005-

The chief marketeer of the USMC is at it again.

Fear-monger.

There is a lot to be cut from the USMC and still have a potent force that America's Navy can use effectively.

What you will not hear from Amos is that the F-35 is a complete waste. Even the USMC STOVL doctrine is a myth shopping for dollars.

Why can we not just use the USMC for what they are good at?

Sometimes the criticism of being a second land army fits. The USMC has been used for Operations: USELESS DIRT 1 and 2 far away from water. We now have whole populations of Marines that have never been near a boat.

Then there is other waste. A recent flat-top amphib was built without a well-deck.

Cost: $3.4B

Useless.

I could find some billions for use by the USMC to get through the year and still have combat effective Marines.

If only they could ditch their pet projects.

Another quote that jumped off the page of the GAO report::

"Once acquired, the current forecasts of life cycle sustainment costs for the F-35 fleet are considered unaffordable by defense officials." (p.23)

Of course, the report says efforts are underway to fix this.

But when you combine this with major questions about the plane's purchase price and capabilities, the argument for replacing the Classic Hornet fleet by a rigorous competitive tender just gets stronger and stronger.
