At home:
Dozens of Australian military bases and army reserves depots face possible closure under a drive to save money amid a $5.5 billion cut to defence spending.
Meanwhile...
Operation:USELESS DIRT:
The government also intends to help bankroll the Afghan military for at least another five years along with a promise that the Australian Defence Force will continue to be "actively engaged in operations in Afghanistan" well beyond this year.
Limited funds to sustain our military, yet the government is willing to waste money propping up an adventure that has no valid defence benefit for Australia.

Don't you consider the US alliance a valid defence benefit for Australia?
Yup it is. However Afganistan was sold to the American public as get OBL. Somehow it morphed into a stupid nation building exercise of a tribal culture.
Punitive mission to get OBL OK. Nation building a backward culture? No thanks. AND...someone in Australian leadership should have pointed that out to the Americans (friends help each other by telling them when they are doing something stupid). Unfortunately, no one in Australian senior leadership was smart enough to do such a thing.
If the Americans told you to go clean a toilet with a toothbrush, would you do it?
I wonder how long DMO would take to buy the tootbrush, and how much it would cost?
Sorry to change the subject but just an FYI for Eric and readers.
New images on Chinese forums are coming out of J20 with "spot markings" all over, looks like the Chinese are getting ready (already?) to drop bombs or fire missiles....
Also, new image just came out on GE of another airfield where maybe the Chinese have been practicing carrier landings. It looks like they painted the landing zone of the carrier on the runway, probably where they practice first before moving on to the life size raised platform.
Real interesting stuff, wasn't sure you were aware of it.
They have been training with the Brazilian Navy on their carrier since 2010.
Just to put a final shiver down the spines of anyone with even a vague sense of history, in his 2013 inauguration speech, Barak Obama actually said "peace in our time".
Talk about history repeating itself...
