What is old is new again

Interesting wireless bomb-kit press release.

Many years ago in the 1990's when various vendors were competing to provide the DOD with an INS/GPS-assisted bomb kit, one of the solutions that didn't get selected offered a wireless setup for pumping target coordinates into the bomb hanging on the wing before release.

Today's JDAM (and various dual-use Paveways in U.S. service) require a hard-wired setup in the aircraft between the inertial navigation system, combat system and the wing hard point.

With a wireless solution you can also offer an easy upgrade to very simple aircraft to make them INS bomb droppers. With a slight modification, you communicate with the INS bomb hanging on the jet via wireless. You punch some buttons on the Up-Front-Display, fill out the form, and send this information to the bomb-kit that has the wireless interface.

I don't know about safety or security. Maybe the USAF/Navy looked at this and were not happy about having yet another radio-frequency source around live ammo and special fuses; and/or numerous other kinds of radio-frequency concerns including extra emissions that an enemy maybe able to detect.

Still interesting though in the simplicity of the concept.
