Bloat

Not much combat value here:

The Department of Defence employs more than 22,000 civilians in non-military roles, such as ensuring Australia's military is equipped to deploy to places such as Afghanistan.

They last had a general pay rise in July 2010.

Careful, you will upset Bonza and AD with words like that.

As a 21 year Army Officer, I'm still trying to figure out what they all do. Especially as we seem to be required to do ever increasing amounts of administration that used to be done by useful people such as Army Clerks (which we have ever dwindling numbers of). So there is a direct correlation between increasing numbers of public servants and administrative activity required by members of the uniformed military. Hmmmm

In addition, we also see what is happening to the Higher Echelons of the Defence Force.
Since 2007 the military has grown by 13%, but star ranked officers have increased by 17%.

In 2007, there were 82 senior civilian executives and hundred and 152 star ranked officers. In 2011, there were 134 senior civilian executives, and hundred and 178 star ranked officers.

In the Defence Department there are 14 deputy secretaries, I wonder what they do.Two further defence secretaries are due to be appointed this year.

These deputy secretaries earn between $300,000 and $400,000 each.
Gives some idea where things are going, and it is not good.
