Another F-22 grounding... guess why

From ABC.

In at least three incidents in the last two weeks, pilots of the $143 million-a-pop stealth F-22 Raptors at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson reported the "hypoxia-like" symptoms, leading the base to ground their F-22s for a day for "review," Air Force spokesperson Lt. Col. Regina Winchester told ABC News.

Anyone really believe USAF was right to allow them to return to service in the first place???

Given that they have found no reason, even after installing new instrumentation, maybe the grounding was "unfounded" in the first place.

I guess that one that crashed was unfounded too.

Just because "they found no reason", that doesn't mean there isn't one.

Leaving aside the fact that these things cost the taxpayer almost $400M a pop (Where did that $143M BS figure come from, I wonder - oh right, the USAF...), there's also the pilots to consider.

It's easy to talk about groundings being 'unfounded' when you're not at 50,000 ft wondering if that woozy feeling that's come over you, is gonna be your last...

Agree URL, I don't think the pilots are thrilled to know that "something" is obviously wrong but not sure what. Wonder how much pressure was put to get F22 back in service even though something isn't working right....pretty sure that price tag had something to do with its hasty return to service...

Document from Sen Hatch website on F-22 costs.

Assertion: The F-22 costs $350M per aircraft.

Facts: The F-22s currently being delivered have a flyaway cost of $142.6M each, which is the cost to build and deliver each aircraft. This number does not include the costs for research and development (that were incurred since 1991), military construction to house the aircraft, or operations and maintenance costs.

That's not 'facts', that weasel acounting. Just like the cost 'facts' you see from LM and the F-35 JPO.

In 2009, it cost $213M to BUILD a combat-capable F-22. And since the real cost of an object is how much you have to pay people to give it to you, the full cost of an F-22 is approx $400M.

Here's a link to an article with the actual figures. If you want to dispute them, please take it up with the official figures, and not the man showing them to you.
