So Boeing goes with the same re-direct method as used in the current Harrier for SVTOL and LockMart goes with the radical new Lift fan. Rationale at the time that the lift fan provided an extra margin of lift probably equalling safety. Consider that Harriers use the more conventional re-direct exhaust method which I suppose has been good enough for the last few decades. The Military chooses the LockMart version supposedly because of the better performance for the SVTOL version. which would comprise about 10% of the total production. Here we are 8-10 years later and the F-35B barely works and is nowhere near combat ready?
When asked about the government contribution to "winning" this order
""In terms of the South Australian Government's commitment to the project, we've given substantial assistance to Rosebank and to BAE Systems to enable them to establish this facility in South Australia.
"I'm not going to go into the exact quantum of that assistance.
"There are various commercial and confidence arrangements that I have to adhere to.
"It's a pure grant that's been provided to both these companies to allow them to purchase this machinery."
