2040? I would say long before that. Certainly a good portion before 2020.

Never the less Eric, Mr Peacock has as Im sure you agree hit the nail on the head. I think he is just being a little polite in sighting 2040 as a date.
It is about time there was a broader debate on what seems to be this countries lock in to the f35 and the C solution supers. Tunnel vision without much of a light at the end of the tunnel.
The F22 was the only intelligent purchase for Australia, capability and deterrent, the things we require. Alas it is gone. what is now needed is a way to ensure that we don't compound this error by locking ourselves into the F35 for the next 40 years by purchasing 100 of them. the USN and USAF are already looking at super hornet and F22 replacements, these are what we should be looking at for the medium term. For now we should purchase another 20 super hornets to enable us to actually have 2 full strength squadrons and a training unit, to be mirrored with our F35 purchase (total no more than 48 airframes)

Only if the F-35 shows proof of life with tested and healthy go-to-war systems.
That day is still years away. And it still will not stand up to emerging Pacific Rim threats.
Just another waste of taxpayer dollars on a dud project.
