Sorry Atticus, a little of my past working life showing in my comments.
Actually many American don't own guns. Much of it this also depends on what state you live in. Conservative states generally have higher gun ownership.
It isn't a conservative or liberal(U.S. context) thing. People of various beliefs have guns of some kind.
In rural areas you have them as tools such as a farm. Where I grew up had a .22 magnum bolt action with a scope and a single barrel 16-gauge shotgun. Just about every household had guns. Big deal they were tools just like anything else. Try and explain that to someone that grew up in the city.
Ever hunt deer? Peasant tastes delicious.
Then there is the fact that the nearest sheriff's deputy could be over an hour away. Good luck with that if you need help. Yes you call them. But your neighbor, the next farm over, is closer.
I'm in Australia now and I love it. And yes there is the gun club thing, but what a hassle. I don't like shooting handguns to go to the trouble that much. And although the old Cold Commander fit nicely in an A2 jacket inside pocket, I don't need that kind of protection here where I live. In the U.S, that concern is more regional.
I accept all that and that is fine. I accept the fact that most Australians are gun-phobic. I also accept the fact that most Australian's will never understand the concept of what it is like to live in different regions of the U.S, where fear-a-government-that-fears-your-guns, makes perfect sense.
Peasant, I thought eating peasants would be illegal? I used to belong to SSAA, and the local pistol club. Enjoyed the technical side, casting reloading etc. However in a drive for Membership a lot of strange people arrived. Left regardding safety concerns. Was enjoyable

Okay, I'll bite - what happened to your guns? Where did they go?
Well, then get some. There must be something available in Oz.
When I was stationed at Woomera, I had a High Standard Supermatic and a Tokarev SVT-40. My wife and I were the only Yanks in the Pistol Club.
Enough said
What is with Americans of the USA persuasion and guns?
My preference is a nice 40 cal Glock. Statistically most perps shot in the torso go down for good with the first bullet and don't get up.
The model 27 is the ultimate concealed carry defense weapon and can still can still fire the 40 cal round.

You can still get a pistoli Eric, in Australia.
You just need to join a pistol club and shoot something like 3 times a month.
Not that big a deal IMHO.
PS, I had a nice Sig P228 in 0.40cal back in the day. Medium size guns always seemed to suit me better than full size. Still miss that gat...
